Starting a new business is easy. Starting a successful business is hard. Conflicting advice abounds—read the introduction for a taste of the various schools of conventional wisdom—so we’re asking you, our readers, to help us sift through the bromides and produce the ultimate cheat sheet: 10 Rules for Starting a Small Business.
Your rules should be clear, specific, and short—no more than three sentences apiece. Don’t just advise us to “be agile” or “find the next big thing.” Tell us, as concisely as possible, something interesting, important, and broadly applicable that you’ve gleaned from your own experiences. Submit one proposed rule per entry, but as many entries as you’d like. As your ideas roll in over the next few weeks, we’re asking you to comment on and vote for your favorites. The submission period will end on Friday, May 25, after which we’ll pick the 10 most helpful, least obvious rules, and enshrine them on one page for future entrepreneurs to consult. We look forward to hearing from you.
